Richard and Jan were looking to utilize the south-facing roof over their garage to offset as much energy as possible while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing symmetrical array. Installation required mounting the system on top of cedar shakes as opposed to the more common asphalt shingles.
The array was located on a surface that is relatively shade-free, although early in the morning there are some shadows from pine trees. Hardware was selected that mitigates the shading effect from the trees and increases overall system efficiency year round. When operating at its potential, this system will offset 100% of the household's energy consumption annually.
