Solar Panel Checklist

Is solar right for me?

1. Have you made your home or business as energy efficient as possible?

2. Do you own the property where the system will be installed?

3. Does your roof face south, southeast, or southwest?

4. Is the roof mostly shade free and unobstructed with maximum access to the sun year round?

5. Is your municipality or association free of any ordinances restricting the installation of a solar panel system?

6. Is the roof in good condition (both shingles and structurally)?

7. Is a long-term payback acceptable? (10 yrs for residential, 5 yrs for commercial)

Solar Basics

The sun provides more energy in one hour than the entire planet uses in a year. It’s powerful, predictable, renewable, and clean.

Installing a solar power system on your home or business will reduce or eliminate your electric bill. All you need is a direct view of the sun, making it ideal for urban areas where wind power isn’t an option.

How It Works

Roof-mounted solar panels are energy collectors that turn sunshine into electricity. During this conversion process—called Photovoltaic (PV)—radiation from the sun creates movement of electrons through wire, resulting in electricity. The electricity is then fed into an inverter box where it is converted into usable energy.

Minnesota Solar

Minnesota has two things working in its favor: clear skies and cool temperatures. This combination puts Minnesota on par with Texas and Florida for the ability to produce solar energy. Find out how solar can work for you.

A standard high-power solar module generates 230 Watts and measures about 5.5 feet by 3.5 feet. A 1 kilowatt Solar System requires about 85 square feet of installation area.
